When Will My Child Get Their First Tooth?

Posted on 8/21/2023 by Dr. Cheryl Freeman
When Will My Child Get Their First Tooth? If your child is a few months old, you may wonder when their baby teeth will begin to appear. You may hear that babies usually get their first tooth when they are around six months old. However, each baby is different. There is no one age that babies get their first tooth. There are some clues that your child may be ready to teethe you can look for.

Babies And Teeth

Some babies are born with one or two teeth. These are called natal teeth, and they are rare. Natal teeth usually fall out within the first few weeks after birth because the tooth roots with natal teeth are shallow and not fully developed. However, once the baby is a few months old, they may begin to get fussy.

You may notice that your baby is getting very fussy. You might also notice the baby is drooling a lot more than usual. You may even see a spot on their gum that looks swollen or red. All of these are signs that your baby may be getting a new tooth soon.

Should I Worry?

While you may be worried about your baby's teething and new teeth, it is normal for your child to have teething pain. There are some things you can do to relieve the pain your baby is in. First, your baby may want to gnaw or bite down on something because that helps to soothe their gums. You can give your baby a wet, cold washcloth that you stick in the freezer for a few minutes. There are also teething toys that you can freeze and then give to your baby. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help your baby feel better. Before you know it, your baby will have a whole set of their first teeth!
