5 Key Foods to Have on Hand After Any Dental Procedure
Posted on 9/6/2021 by Dr. Cheryl Freeman
After you have a dental procedure, it will take a few hours for the numb feeling to go away. The effects of the anesthetic will subside, and when they do, you may be ready to fill your grumbling stomach. Before you eat, make sure you are not numb anymore as you could risk accidentally biting your tongue, cheeks, or lips. To get ready for your first meal after any dental procedure, it is important to stock your pantry with key foods as you may not feel like cooking. In addition, you will want to have things ready if you need to grab something and go out the door.
Be Prepared After Dental Surgery
You may be experiencing some gum tissue discomfort after your dental procedure. Your teeth may also be sensitive to hot and cold foods. In general, try to have foods available that have a soft texture. We suggest our patients have five key foods available.
Our top recommendation is to have a chicken noodle soup ready after your dental procedure. Warm the soup to room temperature and make sure the chicken is in small chunks. The chicken broth itself is an excellent healing food for your body. In addition, the chicken is a good source of protein, and the other cooked vegetables are soft and nutritious.
Second, we suggest having applesauce or other fruit purees available. These foods will be good for a grab-and-go option as you can purchase applesauce pouches at any grocery store.
Dairy products like yogurt or cottage cheese are also good to have available. The soft texture is favorable. Try to look for yogurt that has only a small amount of sugar.
Oatmeal is another good food to have on hand. It does not take long to prepare, and it can be very filling and delicious. If you want to add flavor without adding items that are too hard to chew, try sprinkling a little cinnamon on top.
Lastly, have some ice cream in the freezer. Chances are you could use it as a reward for something! If you have any other questions about how to care for yourself after a dental procedure, please ask us. We are here to help you.
